President Obama tells young people that all the work of parents, educators and others won't matter "unless you show up for those schools, pay attention to those teachers." "What you are learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future." Obama noted that he was raised by a single mother who made him buckle down and work harder at times. He said he's glad she did. by Ann Sanner, Associated Press Writer 9/7/2009

August Events

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich receives Certificate of Appreciation from UWM for supporting, "Project Backpack" on 8-13-09. This was an important partnership because once he was on board others followed his example in our community.
United We Mentor is a program working in collaboration with the Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH).

8/8/09 --Getty Museum Field Trip 8:45 am-4:30 pm We try to give our students in the UWM Program a variety of meaningful excursions in our community. Museums can be magical places to explore. The Getty is one of many outstanding museums we have in Southern California. The more you know about the history of a museum and its art, the more meaningful your trip will be. My favorite part of the Getty is the living art found in the garden. The green grass is the canvas and the people sitting on the lawn are part of an artistic composition. As you enter the garden and walk down the path you symbolize the water flowing downward in the river bed. The soil has been amended with volcanic ash, therefore, the soil appears darker which makes the flowers appear brighter. Like many brilliant architects, the designer of the Getty didn't want large trees blocking the view of his structure. To the architect the structure or building is more important or equal to the art inside, this is a common thread of belief among many architects. The trees are trimmed in the garden so the light shinning through the leaves creates a carpet of patterns on the ground and the garden experience changes throughout the day as the sun moves. The travertine that covers the exterior, interior, and floor surfaces of the museum were numbered as they came out of the quarry. The travertine was organized and applied to the surfaces bearing similar hues of color. It took 6 years to mine and ship the travertine to the museum site. I hope you enjoyed the museum experience and will return again or explore new museums. You can search the Internet for more LA County/Orange County museums to visit or call Char and she will give you some more museum names. Thank you for joining us, Keep up the wonderful work you are doing!!!! Char

UWM would be thrilled to receive a donation of a megaphone so we may communicate effectively at outdoor events.
